Professional Cover Designs

This post is brought to you by my need to show off the frighteningly awesome cover designs I have been using for my stories on Wattpad. As I have mentioned in a previous post, all of my stories are being re-posted on Wattpad for easy sharing and accessibility.

Browsing through Wattpad was like walking down the aisle of a book store. So many stories were capturing my interest because of their clean and eye-catching cover designs. I decided right then that it was time to think about promoting my work seriously. They say you can’t judge a book by its cover, but having eye catching cover art certainly never hurt a writer’s chances for success!

Hiring Freelancers

A good friend of mine mentioned a website called fiverr.com where freelancing services are offered for as low as $5 per job. There are, of course, tiered packages offered by most artists for those who have a bigger budget.

For both my Anthology series and Good Girls Don’t Die, I ended up working with an artist working under the name Germancreative. The turn around time was fast, and the covers turned out great!

I will say right now that I am not being paid to promote Fiverr in any way. However, I do want to share this as a valuable resource for new authors, like myself. Even writers like me who are just starting to put their name out there can afford to present themselves as professionals.

There are other websites which offer similar services as well. I have made money on the side as a freelance writer on a site called Upwork.com. Like Fiverr, Upwork is a freelance job board and networking site where paying customers can hire professionals in just about every field of work.

Do Covers Make a Difference?

Yes. Absolutely yes.

In this media saturated world, potential readers are bombarded by images hand crafted to sell products. Writers need to keep this in mind so that they don’t get overlooked in the shuffle. You don’t need to have the billions of dollars in resources that the big publishing houses have at their disposal, but you should definitely bite the bullet and seek the help of someone who knows what they are doing. Being a highly imaginative and creative writer does not necessarily make an expert photoshop artist.

It is well worth the time to look at how much you can reasonably spend to hire an artist, and then shop around for someone with a portfolio which seems like a good fit. You probably don’t want to hire an artist who specializes in epic fantasy covers if the book is going to be non-fiction.

Also, as someone who has worked as an artist in the past, do remember to manage your expectations. All creative types know the pain of being underpaid for their hard work. Work with artists to find a price that satisfies the need of both parties. That way everyone walks away from the transaction happy!
